Zhang Guolao’s name is a combination of the common Chinese last name “Zhang” and the characters for “fruit” and “old.” He is represented as an old man who rides a mule, sometimes backwards. His mule had the ability to be folded up and placed in his wallet, then could be watered and brought back to normal size. He carries around a bamboo drum stick that can cure life.
