Cats in Chinese history have always been cute pets for people to enjoy and they helped with catching rats and mice. It seems as if a cats' signficance hasn't changed much in the many millenia that they've been domesticated. It was also believed that since cats were able to see in the dark, that they would be able to dispel and chase away any evil spirits, and they were also symbols of good luck (which is popular in other Asian cultures as well).
