Woo Chee Chong SafeDescription
A safe that currently holds museum supplies. Painting on the front is faded and aged reasonably well.Context
This safe used to belong in a Woo Chee Chong store own by Tung Hom and contained many significant treasures. One of it’s most historical uses was storing all the Pink Tourmaline that was shipped to China during the later part of the Qing Dynasty between the late 1800s and early 1900s. The reason for this was the request of the Empress Dowager Cixi who was fascinated by the material. Jennings Hom would later use the safe to store local Chinese American legal documents in it. After Woo Chee Chong closed its downtown location, the safe was donated to the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum and is currently used as a storage container for the museum.
