Sad Iron

Name/Title

Sad Iron

Description

A laundry iron with a detachable wooden handle, which reads "Mrs. Potts Sad Iron" across the top.

Context

The term sad iron indicated it was a solid iron. This iron was invented by Mary Potts to improve the design of other sad (solid) irons. It was filled with plaster rather than lead which made it lighter. It also had a removable wood handle rather than an iron handle and was pointy on both ends which made it heat evenly.
