A long time ago, in Leelanau County, Mr. Gill built a pier. From this pier the products of Leelanau, which were primarily lumber, were shipped off to ports around the Great Lakes. This was long before cherries and wine and skiing and tourists were important to Leelanau County. But, unfortunately, Leelanau ran out of lumber, so Mr. Gill ran out of things to ship from his pier. We don’t know what happened to Mr. Gill, but we do know that the remnants of his pier are an attractive curved spit of rock extending into the lake. The white rock against a cobalt sky makes for a simple, clean composition. The scene is one of colorful serenity.
