General Notes

Note

Parament featuring the symbols of Jonah and the whale and three drops of water. Jonah of the Old Testament was a type of Christ: As Jonah was cast into the waters, swallowed by a great fish, and spewed forth on the third day so Christ descended into Hell, was buried in a tomb and arose on the third day. The symbols found in the story of Jonah and the redemptive work of Christ are combined in the sacrament of baptism. This is based upon Romans 6:3-5 and Colossians 2:12 "...having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him forth from the dead." The baptism paraments show this relationship. Jonah is presented in gold identifying him with Christ as the "sun of righteousness", the "light of the world." Jonah is coming out of the "tomb" as Christ rose from the dead. The three drops of water represent the Holy Trinity in the redemptive act.
