Also known as Horse Mint, the Wild Bergamot is widely distributed throughout Michigan. Usually seen in mid to late summer, entire sandy fields or meadows may be heavily covered with these pink or lavender blossoms. They are members of the Mint family, and have a mildly “minty” aroma. The individual blossoms are very intricate, and begin as clusters of narrow flowers tipped with delicate hairs at the tips. Later in the season, the central flowers shed, and the flowers form a ring around the ends of the stem. Only by observing these very close-up can the real beauty and intricacy be fully appreciated.
