Kambara - #16 of the Fifty-three Stages of the Tokaido Road series.

In the traditional Japanese woodblock print, a snow-covered village is depicted under a serene night sky, with gentle flakes falling; a lone traveler wearing a blue garment and carrying an umbrella walks along a path, while a pack horse follows closely behind. The distant mountains are blanketed in snow, creating a tranquil winter scene.

Considered the best print in the Tokaido series and one of the best Japanese woodcuts ever made, this print is done almost entirely in shades of black with white left to indicate snow. Yet the scene is almost entirely imaginary for no such place appears.
