General Notes

Note

Quilted commission with ten rows of ten blocks of various shades of blue. The edges of the quilt are comprised of various warm colorings of squares. Faithfulness has 100 blocks, representing the inspired response of each class of Calvin alumni to God's faithfulness during the 100 years of the Alumni Association. The traditional quilt block portrays Calvin's rich faith heritage. The blocks in "water" colors represent the earth. Each is built around a center, spreading out in rings, like ripples created when a rock is dropped into water. Our actions generate ripples in our world, influencing it in ways beyond our imagination. The many different fabrics used in each block show diversity and create a sense of depth and movement while the quilting lines mimic ocean waves. The small squares and diamonds in "fire" colors portray Calvin alumni spreading God's love and light throughout the world. Sashes between blocks show the supporting network of connections among alumni - bridges between people, communities, countries and cultures. Leafy quilting lines in the sashes symbolize life and growth. In the border, the diamonds represent Calvin alumni holding hands, encircling the globe.
