General Notes

Note

The vase is in Bangchuiping (Rouleau) Vase Shape: bangchuiping means “wooden club”, and is named after the cylindrical shape of the body, flat shoulders, high neck, which imitate the form of a club with a handle. French scholars termed this vase “rouleau” which emphasises the tall, roll-form body. Popular during the Qianlong period (ca. 1711-1799), the mille fleur, or thousand flower, motif features blossoming peonies, chrysanthemums, hibiscus, morning glories, roses, lotus flowers, daisies, and lilies amongst an abundance of foliage. Each flower has its own specific symbolic meaning, but the motif itself represents the flowers bestow their blessing.
