Note
Jaunt was created as part of a "Jauntin'" series during Robin Jensen's sabbatical at Calvin College in 1975. This particular work was placed near the College Center Building so that children attending classes in the Education Department could respond to and test the sculpture. Inspired by the Biblical story of Jonah and the whale, this sculpture suggests the fluid motion of fish and water and Jonah's joy when he was delivered from the whale. Jaunt's shape is an abstract fish and the large hole symbolizes Jonah finally being expelled from God's special fish after praying and obeying God's command. The various planes of this biomorphic form are heightened by orange, yellow and blue paint and add to the joyous feeling. Jensen chose symbolic colors - the blue depicts the wild sea of the fish, yellow depicts the Light of God and orange represents Jonah finally going to Ninevah and proclaiming God's message. The viewer is invited to take a jaunt over, through and around the sculpture. For Jensen, the "Jauntin'" series reflects "a life journey full of creative adventures, glorifying growth and wonderful surprises."
