Apparition of the Eternal Church

In the painting, a solemn figure in a blue robe, resembling a monk or wise sage, kneels with eyes closed, holding a white cross delicately, surrounded by swirling, textured brushstrokes in shades of blue and gray, suggesting introspection.

General Notes

Note

Expanded Wall Label: This piece was inspired by Howard Slenk playing the organ composition, "The Vision of the Eternal Church" in 1951 when both he and Ed were Calvin students. Prior to this time, Ed had painted in a very realistic style. This was a transition to a more abstract style inspired by the Byzantine. His work from then on became more ecclesiastical in nature
