Since 1997, Cedar Nordbye has utilize the image of a passenger jet in his artwork. As a Jew, fascination with the airplane has centered with its use as a tool of the Diaspora (the dispersal of Jewish peoples around the world) and of Muslim pilgrimages. Growing up in the 1970s a period of political upheaval, he was also deeply influenced by the manipulation of passenger jets by hijackers. After September 11, 2001, he stopped using the image, only to return to it six months later to create this piece, which illustrates the new associations and meanings that thoroughly ensnare the visual image of the passenger jet.
