This film reel depicts the dedication or breaking ground on the soon to be rebuilt Pilgrimage Play Theatre. This video showcases Marie Rankin Clarke and Clara Burdette shoveling this new ground. Though the footage is shaky, we see glimpses of the faces of other prominent citizens attending this ground breaking event.Context
Mrs. Chauncey D. Clarke was a prominent member and funder of two iconic landmarks in Los Angeles: The Pilgrimage Open Air Theatre (now the Ford Theatre), and the Hollywood Bowl. This film reel depicts the dedication or breaking ground of the soon to be rebuilt Pilgrimage Play Theatre, after the original wooden play stage burnt down in 1929 after a brushfire. The rebuilt theater was constructed using concrete and designed by architect William Lee Woollett.Collection
