John Polka, "Silver Lake, Saugatuck, MI" or "Silver Lake", 1990 - Oil on canvas, gilt gold embossed, carved frame.
An impressionistic landscape with bold pink strokes in the sky, the water in the middle distance and among the green lily pads in the foreground.Type of Painting
EaselContext
This view of Silver Lake, south of Douglas, is a good example of how Polka combined Impressionism with influences from Expressionism, yet was able to remain "just this side" of Abstraction. The colors are so bold and "raw" that they almost take on "personality".
Polka studies both in Europe and later, at Ox-Bow. In the 1960s, he opened a studio in Saugatuck where he taught and painted landscapes and portraits of people and animals.Collection
