Context

This view of Silver Lake, south of Douglas, is a good example of how Polka combined Impressionism with influences from Expressionism, yet was able to remain "just this side" of Abstraction. The colors are so bold and "raw" that they almost take on "personality". Polka studies both in Europe and later, at Ox-Bow. In the 1960s, he opened a studio in Saugatuck where he taught and painted landscapes and portraits of people and animals.
