Hollyhocks
c.1930s | Oil on board
Creator: Cora Bliss Taylor
Taylor utilizes composition to draw your eye into the canvas. The house in the background forces your attention back to the hollyhocks in the foreground. To the right and left of the composition are what appear to be hints of buildings. The entire arrangement creates a void in the center, giving the illusion of depth.
This work was probably created in the backyard of the Newnham house (presently the Suncatcher Inn) on Griffith Street in Saugatuck where fellow artist, Robert Fort, lived and worked. The building to the left is possibly the front of Mr. Fort’s studio.
