The Big Pavilion
c. 1945 | watercolor
Notes: This painting is a traditional view of the Big Pavilion, which was the largest dance pavilion in Michigan. The structure, which dominated the Saugatuck waterfront, was known as "the brightest spot on the Great Lakes"
The Big Pavilion burned in 1960 and was never rebuilt. On the left side, we see part of the Coral Gables restaurant, which is still a popular destination for tourists.
Ellen Lanyon was a well-known figure in the art scenes of both Chicago and New York. She also remained a regular summer visitor to Saugatuck. This watercolor was done while she was a student at Ox-Bow.
