Two VHS (Video Home System) cassette recordings of a Feb. 16, 1991 Support Our Troops Rally in response to Operation Desert Storm.
The Warren DeJonge recording of the rally at Saugatuck High School opens with a preamble of yellow ribbons and flags along slushy Center Street, driving to Saugatuck with the parade marchers, cars and fire trucks, and the rally from the left side of the stage.
The Deb Dykstra and Steve Steggerda recording includes footage of a pre-rally parade from Beery Field in Douglas to the High School and footage of the rally from the right side of the stage.Context
Scenes include school children and the Campfire girls preparing for the parade, a veteran's color guard and Father Corwin Stoppel playing the bagpipe. The rally at the high school kicked off with the Star Spangled Banner played by Saugatuck High School band, a prayer by Corwin Stoppel, opening remarks and the reading of the names of community members serving in the Middle East by Jeff Wilcox, and followed by speakers including Patty Birkholz, Jessie Dahlman, Paul Gilligan[?] of Laketown Township, Fred Upton, Peggy Boyce, and the families of serving soldiers. Some of the speaker's introductions were edited out of the recordings or were not introduced.Collection
