Description

Photo of a memorial sign that lists the names of Douglas World War II servicemen including Arndt, Ash, Baker, Bartholomew, Berry, Bekken, Bieler, Buck, Campbell, Culver, Dailey, Dempster, Durham, Engel, Fisch, Garrelts, Gates, Goshorn, Hall, Hamlin, Inman, Jennings, Jones, Kingsley, McKillips, Millar, Monique, Mueller, Osterberg, Pshea, Sabo, Schultz, Scott, Shumaker, Standish, Swanson, Ten Have, Thomas, Tisdale, Van Syckel, and Weed. Behind the sign a sidewalk, snow, powerlines, a white building and a field or lake is visible. According to the May 10, 1944 "The Dope" newsletter, "It stands on the corner of the village Athletic Field, besides the flag-pole and facing Wiegert's" and "Ky Waltz was the spark-plug on this; Bill Wicks was the chief builder; Frank Oliver helped with the paint; Herm Bekken erected it; and the [Douglas] village Board, God bless 'em, came through with the dough."
