Scope and Content

1. Black album of photographs of artworks loaned for display in the 1997 "Painting the Town" exhibit at the Saugatuck-Douglas History Center museum. Some artworks have subsequently been donated to the SDHC. 2. Bag of photos of artworks compiled as a pool of local art for selection in the "Painting the Town" exhibit. In most cases the artist is noted but the owner/location of the artwork is not. These are mostly artworks that did not appear in the final exhibit. 3. Folder of artwork loan paperwork, promotional items and other documents associated with the exhibit. 4. Linked to this entry are four video recordings. See blue "web link" below. A. Kit Lane and Don Badamo speaking about each of the artworks on display. Bill Manifold on camera. Taped on 9/24/1997 by Bill Manifold. Copied from VHS tape in 2025, no DVD version. B. Ben Ebling and James Schmiechen recounting the creation of the "Painting the Town" exhibit and the people and organizations involved. Five minutes is Schmiechen (standing in for Judy Anthrop) leading a tour of Museum shop merchandise like a Big Pool reproductions sign, the Stan Wilson-designed landmarks afghan, Ted Reyda's stone mosaic balls, panoramic photos, posters from past exhibits. The final minute is a story about the Museum's new security system narrated by SDHS president Bob Johnson. C. Jeff Wilcox about funding; then Ted Reyda, with comments by Hugh Stephens, about the creation of the exhibit. D. Ken Carls about the exhibit and reading a text about authenticity. Part one of Judy Anthrop introducing new merchandise in the museum shop. E. Judy Anthrop store tour part 2.

Context

This exhibit laid the groundwork for future scholarship of local art.
