Context

Kit Lane is a native Michigander. She and her husband, Art, came to the Saugatuck-Douglas area in 1967 and purchased the Commercial Record, a century-old weeklynewspaper that covers Saugatuck and Douglas. In 1978 they bought the Fennville Herald which Kit ran. It is thought to be the only his-and-hers newspaper combination in Michigan's journalistic history. The couple retired from the weekly newspaper business in 1988 and since that time Kit has written more than 20 books. These include full-scale biographies of early Michigan leaders Lucius Lyon, the state's first state senator, and John Allen, founder of Ann Arbor; a four-volume series on Saugatuck area maritime history; four small books of well- researched, but light, history of the Saugatuck area; and historical atlases for both Allegan and Ottawa counties. In addition, Kit and her husband have written four books in the Traveler's Preview series of guidebooks on their travels in Fiji, Australia, the Galapagos Islands and southern Spain. Her most recent writing venture is Between the Bridges, a book of historically accurate short stories set in Saugatuck 1835 to 1984. Kit holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from Michigan State University and a Master of Library Science from Western Michigan University. For nearly a decade she taught language arts in the prison extension classes of Montcalm Community College. She is a frequent lecturer to historical societies, women's groups, and genealogy clubs and is a certified lay speaker in the Methodist Church. The Lanes have four grown sons and three grandchildren. After more than 30 years of residence in the Village of Douglas they recently moved to a new home in Saugatuck Township.
