Scope and Content

Digital scan of a 22 Feb 1963 Commercial Record newspaper clipping titled "Rotary Club to Give Jarvis Field to School Friday Eve."

Context

Story about how in 1949 Saugatuck-Douglas Rotary Club honored citizen Leroy D. Jarvis with the creation of the Jarvis Memorial Athletic Field. Five acres of the former Andrew Schumann farm were purchased from DeForest Doerner. The club funded the land purchase by raising and selling Christmas trees. The trees were planted on the village's "airport property" in 1951 and harvested between 1955 and 1960. The club deeded the playing field to the school district in 1963.
