Forest Haven Soldiers: The Civil War Veterans of Glen Lake & Surrounding Leelanau By Leonard G. Overmyer III (Overmyer Historicals: Grand Rapids) 1999 This book is a compilation of soldiers from the Glen Lake area who served in the Civil War with many previously unpublished pictures and narratives. It is interesting to Saugatuck-area readers because of Captain (later Major) William H, Dunn of Ganges who was the head of Company E, 10th Michigan Calvary. Overmyer relates how Company E, under Dunn's leadership, captured about 80 members of a Georgia regiment who were attempting to slip off to Mississippi to avoid surrender and parole at the close of the war - without firing a single shot. Dunn began his service as a member of the 5th Michigan Calvary and rescued Major Luther S. Trowbridge after his horse was shot out from under him at the Battle of Gettysburg. Both Trowbridge and Dune left the 5th in 1 863 and were organizing members of the 10th Calvary, Major Dune was active in the GAR after the war. The horse which he had taken to battle lived for many years and was ridden in Memorial Day parades. Myrtle (Warner) Stremler of Ganges remembers that even in his later years, when his horseback riding skill was limited by advanced age, Dune insisted on being mounted for the Ganges Memorial Day parades. Mrs. Stremler notes that the efforts of the Major to control his horse were often more interesting then the speeches at the annual ceremony. A copy of the book was presented to the Society by the author, a former resident of Glen Arbor who presently resides in Grand Rapids, with thanks for assistance during his research by Society archivist Bill Kemperman, Louis and Betsy Plummer, Kit Lane and other Society members.
