Description

The Reverend George N. Smith and his wife Arvilla A. Powers Smith , spent their adult lives as Congregational missionaries and teachers among Chief Wakazoo's Black Lake Ottawa. In 1838 the Smiths founded the Old Wing Mission in Northern Allegan County, which they nurtured until 1849, when Chief Wakazoo and the Smiths decided to relocate to Northport in the Leelanau Peninsula. Then editors have compiled the diaries and memoirs of this remarkable pioneer couple to produce this book.
