Scope and Content

Archival collection containing the entirety of Charles Lorenz's research on the history of the Saugatuck-Douglas area. There are 24 boxes of materials that include notes, photocopies, manuscripts, books, photos, and a card catalog. The majority of this material was used for his manuscripts for his self-published book and an unpublished paper: The Early History of Saugatuck and Singapore, Michigan 1830-1840 (published) and The Early History of the Black Lake Region 1835-1850 (unpublished). Alongside his research, Lorenz also kept materials related to the various community organizations and projects that he was involved in, inlcuding: the Saugatuck Douglas Historical Society, Project Lakewell, Bed and Breakfast organization, etc. There are also 3 pieces of artwork included with the materials. The art consists of 2 ink on paper drawings and one watercolor. All 3 contain scences from the Saugatuck area and have been included in the art collection rather than the archival collection. 24 boxes-research and personal materials 1 shelving unit of a card catalog containing 11,000 cards.

Date(s) Created: 1830-1995 Date(s) Assembled: 1970-1990 Archivist's Notes: There are some items in the collection that may need to be scanned in the future such as The Early History of Saugatuck and Singapore, Michigan 1830-1840 and The Early History of the Black Lake Region 1835-1850. They haven't been scanned yet due to lack of a high quality scanner. Another note is that some of the slides do not have protective sleeves because we ran out. Once another order comes in, though, the rest of the slides need to be sleeved and labeled. Also, the original order for the collection was no longer present. After changing hands several times and being moved several times, the files have been shifted enough that the order was no longer there. As a result, an order was established to make the materials easier for researchers to use. For example, all files on early settlers are in the same two boxes where before they were spread throughout the entire collection. Due to the large size of the collection, it was decided to arrange it only to the series level. If, however, researchers request that the arrangement become more specific then it would be a good idea to go back through the collection and process it down to the item level. This will take a great amount of time, though, so it has been decided that it should only be done if it becomes necessary to make the collection more accessible to researchers. There were 3 pieces of art that were left in the files as well. These were removed and placed in the art collection to ensure proper care. They have the same accession number as the rest of the collection, they are simply in another location. The papers and photos are in relatively good condition, but there is a moderate amount of deterioration, especially to the photocopies and typewritten notes. This deterioration is mostly due to age and typical wear, but there is some evidence of damage from mice on several pieces. The mice damage is primarily bite marks on the corners of several pages. But, that is only present on a very small percentage of the materials. The deterioration presents itself as yellowing paper and severely faded letttering on the photocopied pages. It can also be seen in the microfiche copies which have darkened enough to the point of being almost illegible in some cases. The card catalog had a lot of dirt and debris on it, which was cleaned off before being shelved. As a result of sitting in those conditions for several years, though, the cards are now slightly to severely discolored.

But, Lorenz always signed and dated the copyright to his own work so distinguishing between his work and others is very easy.
