Scope and Content

Consists of books, articles, handwritten notes, and typewritten notes on various topics that were more background research for his books rather than the main topics. This research was both for his writing and for his personal interests. There are various books on Michigan and Chicago history. While the Michigan books are relevant to his writing, the books on Chicago were most likely of personal interest because he was raised there. There are also several binders in Box 19 that contain research on Saugatuck history and the Dutcher Lodge. The Dutcher Lodge binder contains copies made of the ledger from 1866-1915. The rest of the materials contain various topics, both historic and personal. They also have forms that display how Lorenz was able to access some of his information. For example, there are forms for accessing vital records for indivisuals, as well as geneologies. These forms, though, are blank and are most likely just extra copies that were kept in case he wanted to access a different record in the future. There are also the sources that Lorenz used for his research, such as several of Kit Lane's books and other various articles about the area in box 17. Also, in box 18 there are various publications about Saugatuck and Michigan. This includes poems, short stories, and the like. 4 boxes-research materials on various topics

Archive Notes

Date(s) Created: 1866-1988 Date(s) Assembled: 1970-1988 Archivist's Notes: These documents didn't seem to be specific in their topic. It's mainly a combination of multiple topics on the history of the area and Chicago. And, because they weren't specific with events, people, etc. they were seperated and considered background research instead. In the future, if a researcher or anyone is looking through the folders and finds that there was a specific order or topic to some of these materials, then they should be set into the correct series. But, for now, it's best to consider these materials as background research. Before processing began a label was placed on box 17 that reads "Charles Lorenz Box 2." It is unknown where this number came from or what it signifies. For the time being, it has been left until the origin of the number can be determined. For this record, though, it will be referred to as Box 17 and will have a label stating that.
