Scope and Content

All research pertaining to ships built in Saugatuck. Includes research into the history of local shipyards and boat builders of the area. The documents contain some handwritten notes, photocopies of materials, and photos. These photos make up the majority of this series. Each photo is labeled, either on the front or back, with the ship's name. Occassionally, there is also a brief paragraph with information on the ship's history. Some of these photos are panels from a previous exhibit that was done by the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society, when Lorenz was still on the board. These panels have a white frame that also has a colored dot. The various colored dots correlate to the legend panel, which describes where each boat was built. The other photos are a mixture of reproductions and original photographs. All of the framed photos are reproductions, while the unframed ones are mainly original images. These originals are not always labeled, unfortunately and do not contain dates either. There is also a scrapbook that Lorenz put together of ships built in Saugatuck. This scrapbook has a blue cover and spiral binding. Photos of each ship (reproductions, not originals) are pasted to the pages along with a short biography for each one. 1 box-research materials on ships

Notes

The majority of the materials are copies which are in decent shape. There is a minor amount of deterioration from age on the reproductions, which appears as faded colors. But, there are no signs of serious damage. The same is true for the original photographs in this series. They show some minor deterioration to age, but nothing severe. For those the photos that seem fragile compared to the others, they have been placed in sleeves to protect them. It would be good to check on their quality every so often.
