Description

Green-patina, cast metal cigarillo tip trimmer and ashtray with branded plate that displays the text "George. W. Childs Cabinets New 5 Cent Cigar / Steele-Wedeles Company". The footed ash tray is adorned with baroque flourishes. A silver-colored arm that ends with a circular "finger rest" conceals a blade to slice the tip off a slim cigar when the arm is depressed. The cigar would have to be about the same diameter as a pencil to fit inside the cutter.

Context

George W. Childs (1829-1894) was an influential Philadelphia newspaper publisher. He lent his name to a brand of cigars. The Steele-Wedeles Company was a Chicago grocery wholesaler that operated from 1862 to 1953.
