Scope and Content

A small collection of photographs, postcards, and slides that are of Saugatuck and are related to its history. The photographs are a mixture of original images and reproductions which have been blown up. The photos are of ships, Singapore Fest, scenery around Saugatuck and the like. Several of these photos are too big to fit in a standing box, so they were placed in box 24 where they would fit. These photos are in a folder labeled "Saugatuck Scenery" and are mainly reproductions with a few original images. The postcards are his collection of historic and modern postcards from Saugatuck. These were organized by Lorenz in a binder in Box 21 by year. There are also slides which contain images of Saugatuck scenery such as the Big Pavilion, along with historic images like the portrait of William Butler. These slides appear to have been used as part of talks that Lorenz gave on Saugatuck history at various events. There is a slide order list along with a typed copy of his presentation, but the slides are no longer in their orginal order. When being transferred to sleeves, an attempt was made to place the slides in order, but it does not coincide, exactly, with the list he provided. Exactly when Lorenz accumulated these photos and slides is unknown, but it is very likely that they are from the 1980s when he was giving lectures and still conducting research for his writing. 1 box-photographs 1 binder-postcards 1 box-slides 1 folder-oversized photographs

Date(s) Created: 1980-1990 Date(s) Assembled: Most likely the 1980s Archivist's Notes: Several of the images that Lorenz had were too big to fit into the box with the other photographs, so they were placed in box 24 which is a flat box. If new boxes come in that can fit the large photos, then the oversized ones should be moved in with the other photos. Also, there were not enough supplies at the time of processing to place all of the photos and slides in sleeves. Once more sleeves are available then this process should be finished and the record updated. If possible, it would be a good idea to try to consolidate these items into one box but that requires supplies that we don't currently have and will need to be done in the future. There are even photos he took of older photos. The poscards are in a binder that Lorenz organized by year. All of the cards are in sleeves and carefully organized.

Notes

There is only a minor amount of deterioration present, which is typical with age. Some of the slides have begun to turn pink and several photos have begun to fade. But, there are no signs of serious damage to any of the images.
