Context

This influential community organization was founded as the Columbine Garden Club in 1928, renamed the Douglas Garden Club when federated in 1947, and renamed again in 2001 to today's [2024] Saugatuck-Douglas Garden Club. Initially the club brought together women, and their spouses, to beautify the community. Over time, additional public service goals were added to the club's bylaws. Club members have planted flowers and hung holiday decorations in public places, presented horticultural classes and flower shows, organized community pride day and garden awards, raised funds for for high-school scholarships and junior gardener projects with garden walks, homes tours and plant sales. This collection contains photos of club members, and the residences and public spaces they improved. Due to the club's long history, the photos show changes in style of dress, design, decorating and architecture. The social networks and organizational expertise built up by service-minded club members energized many other community organizations. A member of National Garden Clubs, Inc. the club has a standardized governance structure.
