14"x11" black and white photograph of the Saugatuck Service Station located on the corner of Holland and Francis Street (which was the route of US 31. ) Photo taken in 1927 shows two automobiles at the Standard service station next to two visible Standard Red Crown gas pumps. Also in the photo are four men and four women. In addition to gasoline, travelers could fill up on House's Cherri-Mix.
This image was featured as History Mystery #85 with the question "This was a full-service station that operated in the 1930s. What did a gallon of gas cost in those bygone days?" and the solution "This was a full service station that operated in the 1930s when gas averaged 11 to 13 cents a gallon."
A note from the Jack Sheridan drive, below, indicates the gas station was owned by the family of Michelle Heller of Hanover Park, Illinois.
