collection: Recent gift to the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society by Patrick Shay
Building site signboard—probably painted by Hoerman, in the Arts&Crafts manner of the time. This construction sign of 1937 marked the construction of the Merrill “cottage” at 2420 Lakeshore Drive near Pier Cove. Carl Hoerman left his native Germany as a young man to study and practice architecture in Chicago but fell in love with the Saugatuck area’s natural beauty. He spent most of his adult life painting the area landscape and designing homes, many of them large Arts&Crafts “summer homes,” but also reconstructed Saugatuck Village Hall, Congregational Church.
Erlin Sundin, Swedish immigrant, was a well-known carpenter (with his brother Olaf) of Goshorn Lake.General Notes
