Caption from 2001 SDHS book "Off the Record" — Destination Washington, D. C. — Saugatuck seniors depart on the 1951 senior trip. This was the spring following the fire that had destroyed a large portion of the school. The surviving gymnasium section is seen on left. Students in this photo may include the Kanera twins, Marlene Smisor (possibly Marlene L. Martin d 2012), George Baker, Erma Gleason, Nancy Simmons, Maxine Henry, Ann gore, Jeanne Anderson, Erv Kasten, Doc Waugh (superintendent of Schools) and Jerry Bale. — "Jerry Bale's mom was the girls' chaperone, and Marc Waugh's dad watched over the boys.
