In 1885 Michigan enthusiasts initiated activities to commemorate the sesquicentennial anniversary of the state's admission into the union. To coordinate responses, officials felt it best to involve all 82 counties. Therefore, information was disseminated to governmental units urging promotion of the sesquicentennial by various means. In January, 1986, the Ottawa County sesquicentennial committee was formed, comprised of representatives from cities, villages, townships in the county itself.
County history has been captured in Reflections of Ottawa County, a part of the committee's efforts to memorialize this auspicious occasion. It launched with an account of the Michigan fight for statehood, then gives a general overview off Ottawa County through the years. The balance of the book addresses unique places, people and events of each municipality.
