In 1999, SDHS member William T. Kemperman transcribed these government ledgers that annually record land ownership to determine property taxes.
As the United States government extinguished indigenous people's land ownership rights in Michigan, speculators purchased large parcels of land. Property tax assessment rolls document how these parcels were divided and sold to settlers who built houses, farms and businesses or further subdivided the land.Collection
