Description

Muslin pillowcase decorated with embroidered signatures of men and women including Sarah and Faith Kirby. Centered among the names is the date and location "1902.-'4. Douglas M." Other signatures may include Natalie Spencer, Mrs. Lena Spencer, Earnest Shermers, Ruth Binner, Maud Trunbull, Bertha Case, ? Valkenberg, Anthony E. Anderson, Hattie N. Spencer, Jessie Langworth, Robert A. Smith, Mal? Trumble, Harold E. Beck, Mrs. O.M. Flint, Laura Dr. Parrish, Don Burns, Marguerite Walker, Effie Ford, Rudolph Jorgenson, Mrs. A. Reanette, Albert Palmer, Mabel Hennesy, Marion Kerr, Stella Palmer, Alice Buell, Eda R. Gillet, Mildred Walz, Mrs. Nelson, Thos.? Bennet and others difficult to decipher. Decorative embroidered additions include flowers, an owl and a woman's head in profile. The back of the pillow is constructed of four rectangles of fabric pieced together with a half-inch lace inset.

Context

Faith Kirby graduated Saugatuck High School in 1901 and would have been about 18 in 1902. Signer Harriet Natalie Spencer was a teacher.
