Description

Porch of a semi-collapsed wooden building with the caption "Stoughton Hall built in 1909 - wrecked by a tornado in 1956." This image was featured as History Mystery # with the solution: This is Stoughton Hall which was located on a very high dune at the middle of Camp Gray (now the Presbyterian Camp). It was damaged by the disastrous April 3, 1956 tornado. Also included is a photo of the building prior to the tornado.

Context

In 1956, a tornado grazed Camp Gray, then leveled the Oval Beach refreshment house and Kalamazoo lighthouse before wreaking havoc to the northeast. The storm destroyed property in Laketown Township before killing nineteen people in the Zeeland area.
