Context

Voted “Best Museum” in 2005 - the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society museum does it again! It is recommended that you feel the amazing wallpaper that wraps the museum walls over fifty feet and stands 11 feet tall—picturing hundreds of interesting Saugatuck-Douglas area houses, businesses, cottages and even a few old and new barns. Then check out the giant 16-foot panorama shot of our Lake Michigan shoreline—all 6 miles of it—a montage of aerial artistry, shot especially for this exhibit. Along the south wall, is the very fine journalism/history and artwork by the Saugatuck 6th graders. Lots of stories, drawings—a new book on the history of our architecture—with much more to keep you busy after you finish your tour. If you wish to stay for extra and in depth history, the gift shop-south gallery room has new interactive digital shows that will take you back to the days of Saugatuck boatbuilding (featured on the panoramic 37” monitor screen). Enjoy film shots of the Big Pavilion fire in 1960. Admission is free and the doors are open daily from noon to 4. Take the chain ferry and walk along the river a few blocks. Sit and enjoy the river view in the garden area of the museum.
