Original Michigan Allegan County Plat Map P. 76 and 77 of Singapore, Wayland, Diamond Springs, Moline, Burnips Corners.Context
Aspirational map of Singapore from that was cut out of the Titus 1873 Allegan County Atlas and shrink wrapped. See 2016.13.01 for entire atlas.
Map was reprinted in "Lost and Found" by Kit Lane, 2000, page 19.
Map was reprinted in "Raising the Roof" by James Schmiechen with the caption, "Map of Singapore, 1873. Singapore was the famous 'Wild Cat' mill-town founded in 1837 near the mouth of the Kalamazoo River at Lake Michigan. As a thriving lumber producing center, it exported millions of board feet of lumber to Chicago and elsewhere during the heyday of the lumber boom era in the 1860s, but disappeared as fast as the nearby forests of white pine were clear-cut. This map from 1873 shows Singapore on its last legs. From this time the town was slowly abandoned. The mill was packed up and sent to St. Ignace. Some houses were moved to new sites upriver in Saugatuck, while the remaining structures were left to be buried beneath the moving sand dunes. The plat suggests a much larger town was planned, but in reality few of the lots ever had structures built upon them."Collection
