Scope and Content

28 page brochure - Includes many area photos and an article about the “Fellowship Summer School and Recreation Center” conducted by minister Benjamin Fay Mills and his spouse Mary Russell Mills, a Ralph Waldo Emerson scholar. When the brochure was printed, the plans for the school were not complete. The main sessions were expected to be held in the Saugatuck Council Chamber. Inquiries were directed to the Park Hotel, Oak Park, Illinois until June 10th. On page 6 "...Mr. Mills chose the east shore of Lake Michigan as the most desirable general locality, and after thorough inquiry concerning the east shore resorts, he has selected Saugatuck and Douglas as the ideal place for the Summer School and Recreation Center. The Mills School, together with the work of the Forward Movement, will cause this locality to become an intellectual center of the highest grade." Likely printed by Reed-Tandler in Grand Rapids since they have an ad on page 26. Includes transportation map

Context

This guide promoted resorting in Saugatuck and Douglas, specifically to visitors interested in the "elevating" New Spiritual Era and Transcendental philosophies that were also taught and discussed at the Forward Movement Park and Camp Gray. Mills was inspired by Swami Vivekananda, suggesting Mills may have played a role in the establishment of the Vivekananda Retreat in Ganges.
