2025.25.01Description
6-inch square decorative ceramic tile printed with an illustration of the view from Mount Baldhead in brown glaze. A paper label with an integrated hanger covers the back of the tile. The label is printed with a brief history of Saugatuck and the text "Pete & Joe Shop, Russell and Jean Force" and "Manufactured by The Kemper-Thomas Company" of Cincinnati, Ohio.Context
The tile is from the estate of Joan and Jim Stube, who frequently visited from the Chicago area. The tile was purchased sometime between 1940 and 1970. The Stubes had a condo at Saugatuck Shores from 1986 to 2017.
Joan Stube’s mother Eleanor Ericson, with her sister Jessie (Paesler) Orr, visited Saugatuck starting in the early 1900s. Eleanor stayed at “The Tisdale House" (the William G. Tisdale house at 300 N. Ferry Street). Eleanor and daughter Joan spent summers at Camp Gray, both as camper and then as a counselor. [See oral history interview with Eleanor Ericson at 2024.41.226] Eleanor died in 2000 at age 98.
Dora A. Buechner 1887-1970 and William Buechner 1883-1969 (pronounced Beek-ners) were relatives. They lived at 445 St. Joseph Street, the SE corner of Mary and Joseph, in a tiny house that has since been torn down and rebuilt. They are buried at Saugatuck’s Riverside Cemetery.
Also included in this entry are Stube family photos from a visit in August, 1944.Collection
