Scope and Content

Seven ledgers or scrap books documenting club membership, meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, programs, constitution and bylaws of three local music clubs. The Douglas Music Study Club (DMSC) was organized April 29, 1916 "to develop the musical talent of its members and to stimulate musical culture in the community." Newspaper clipping in the first DMSC book reads: MUSIC STUDY CLUB Saturday afternoon April 29, ten ladies met at the home of Miss Maude Turnbull to discuss the organizing of a Musical Club. After a couple of meetings a club was formed which will be known as the “Music Study Club of Douglas." The Club has a membership of fourteen active members. The following officers have been elected: President, Mrs. Rudolph Zeitsch; Vice President, Miss Maude Turnbull; Secretary, and Treasurer, Miss M. Lenore Spencer; Librarian Miss Louise Craine. The President appointed Mesdames Charles Ellis and W. G. Tisdale to act with the officers as the Board of Directors. The meetings will be held the last Saturday afternoon in each month, beginning in September and closing with June. The 1946-47 roll call includes the surnames Allen, Boos, Bruce, Burgess, Carr, Campbell, Clough, Demerest, Drought, Eddy, Force, Fuller, Forrester, Goshorn, Gifford, Hungerford, Jones, Maycrost, Millar, Newham, Parrish, Peirce, Prentice, Ruley, Schreckengust, Taylor, Waddell, Warner, Walz, Berry, Rininger, McVoy, Beler, and Snyder. The Rubinstein Club was launched in 1965 with its object being "the study of music, the promotion of the musical interests of the community and the cultivation of the public taste for music. The Hamilton Music Hour Club was organized in June 1941 and held choral practice each meeting and raised funds for scholarships or instruments for schools.
