Portfolio of eight reproductions of paintings by Robert Thom commissioned and distributed by the Michigan Historical Commission, copyright 1966. Topics include: A. Before History, 10,000 BC - mastodons feeding in a pine forest B. Michigan Indians Algonquian Village, about 1500 AD - deer hunter drags is prey into a village white women grind corn, slice pumpkin for drying and scrape hides. Wigwams and a canoe under repair in the background. C. Sieur de la Salle and the "Griffon", August 27, 1679 - Sailing ship surrounded by canoes paddled by fur trappers and Native Americans D. Furs - Trappers - Traders, 1660-1850 - A white trader and a Native American man consider a pelt in a trading post while the Native's family wait outside E. Massacre at Michilimackinac, June 2, 1763 - British soldiers fooled by a game of lacrosse F. The Detroit Fire, June 11, 1805 - settlers, surrounded with their few saved possessions, watch as the fort burns G. The Boy Governor, July 24, 1831 - a young man is sworn into office H. When Pine was King, 1840-1890 - lumberjack chops at a pine tree. Each reproduction has lengthy historical text by F. Clever Bald on the reverse side.
