Colored postcard of the Idlers Rest rooming house.
An enclosed note reads: "The picture is of the house on the corner of Frances Street and Holland Street. The house behind the Flag Pole was demolished (or moved?).
The barracks-like building in the background was a hotel for lumbermen during the lumber boom and re-building of Chicago after the fire. It then became a tourist hotel due to its being on the hill and therefore breezier, before air conditioning.
The barracks-like building was completely gutted and restored in about 1980 by two local couples. A subsequent divorce caused bankruptcy and the property was taken over by a bank in South Haven.
I bought one of the four condos in 1983. The property then was called Village Hill Manor."
