INTERURBAN BIG SUCCESS Passengers from Saugatuck and Douglas immediately took to the new electric passenger service to Holland and Grand Rapids. The service provided a long-standing need for reliable and affordable transportation.
The only setback in the service had been when in January 1900 a car-barn fire occurred and destroyed all ten cars. Fortunately replacement cars arrived in spring to put the railway back in service.
The Commercial Record commented on the loss: “The people of Saugatuck will realize now, as never before, the benefits derived from the road, for it is well known that a blessing is never fully appreciated until after it is lost.”
The exciting news for West Michigan riders was the announced plan to erect a huge dance pavilion on the waterfront in Saugatuck.
True to their word, construction began in March 1909 with a planned opening in July 1909. The Interurban established a train stop at the Big Pavilion to bring passengers from Macatawa, Holland, and Grand Rapids to enjoy dancing to the sounds of big city bands.
The Interurban Railway service while it lasted, provided much needed transportation, timely service, and fond memories.
