According to Kit Lane, square dances used to be common in Douglas.
The 1954 Visitors Guide printed by the Chamber of Commerce listed "Monday is square dance night in Saugatuck [at the Village Square], and vacationers are the guest of the Chamber of Commerce. In Douglas, it is Saturday nights that dancers gather at the Athletic Field and have their pleasure as guest of the village of Douglas."Collection
