Saugatuck Harbor from Douglas
1994 watercolor
This late summer watercolor echoes Carl Hoerman's view from 65 years earlier. Boyce's watercolor combines goldenrod flowers in the foreground, the docked tugboat Reiss and the steamer Keewatin at Lake Kalamazoo with Mt. Baldhead in the far distance.
On the left edge a vine breaks out of the mat zone, as does the bow the Keewatin on the right.
This watercolor had pride of place in Marie Muha's Framing for Friends workshop in Douglas for decades. Marie said this was the first painting Peggy Boyce did after she retired from her career as an educator, with the date of September 6, 1994 included in pencil in the lower right of the artwork. After Marie's sudden passing in the winter of 2024, the watercolor came to the History Center where it will remain on public view.
