Description

The book is a long letter written in 1862 by Father Louis Baroux to his Superior. It describes his work at Silver Creek mission with the Potawatomi Indians of Southwestern Michigan and from it emerges the early history of Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church of Silver Creek near Dowagiac MI and a chronicle of the Pokagon band of Potawatomi. The author is a “firm defender and understanding confident of a wronged misunderstood people”. This account of Father Baroux’s Indian ministry was first published in France, but did not appear in English until long after his death. Today original copies are difficult to obtain but this Hardscrabble reprint in a numbered limited edition is a faithful reproduction. This edition is copy number 176 of only 392 copies.
