Context

Casual use of what is now considered a racial stereotype, the "Mammy" image was part of a romantic notions about life in the antebellum South. The happy plantation narrative was popularized by Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel "Gone with the Wind" and 1939 film that included the O'Hara family estate Tara.
