White clay bowl from a smoking pipe. The clay is smooth, white and without glaze. The bowl has a pointed foot but is missing a large chip from one side and the stem is missing.Context
According to the donor, the item was "found during construction work at [the] Union Street curve in Douglas."
This style of pipe has been manufactured since the 16th century in England, the Netherlands, and Germany and are still being made today although they fell out of favor for most smokers after World War I when more durable pipe materials were developed.Cataloged By
